Mediating in Florida: An Advanced Exploration – Levin College of Law

  • 8:30 a.m. – 4:10 p.m.
  • A series of presentations devoted to discussing mediation while interweaving topics of Ethics, Domestic Violence, and Diversity/Cultural Awareness. This is an amazing chance to learn from a panel with more than 100 years of combined mediation experience!

New Paradigms in Peacebuilding: When Justice Heals and a Culture of Peace Prevails

  • James O’Dea, the former President of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and former Washington Office Director of Amnesty International and a well-known figure in international social healing who has conducted reconciliation dialogues for 15 years, will be speaking! He will be discussing the following:

Peacebuilding, human rights work and conflict transformation are undergoing a sea-change  in relation to broad based cultural transformation, a new repertoire of skills and capacities and the benefits cross-disciplinary collaboration.  Psychology, new science, systems theory are now at the table with law and diplomacy and not only enhancing the tool kit of peacebuilders but shaking the worldview foundations of traditional approaches. At the heart of this emergent approach to peace, reconciliation and restorative justice is the science and practice of societal healing and the framework for creating resilient cultures of peace.

Film Night: “Bully”

  • 7 p.m. in the Reitz Union Auditorium
  • During this event, we will show the new, beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary “Bully”! It’s directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch. The film opens a window onto the pained and often endangered lives of bullied kids, revealing a problem that transcends geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. It documents the responses of teachers and administrators to aggressive behaviors that defy “kids will be kids” clichés, and it captures a growing movement among parents and youths to change how bullying is handled in schools, in communities and in society as a whole. You don’t want to miss this viewing a heart touching film!

Conflict Resolution Training and Breakfast

  • 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in Emerson Alumni Hall Presidents Conference Room C
  • Off Campus Life is partnering with UF’s Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution and the River Phoenix Center to provide apartment managers a FREE training on conflict resolution.  The purpose of this training is to provide you with steps to follow to resolve conflict and more information about resources on campus and in the community that can assist you with conflict resolution. Breakfast will be provided at 9am and parking on campus will also be provided.   Space is limited to RSVP please email Nora Kilroy at norak@offcampus.ufl.edu, with the names and email addresses of the staff you would like to attend, by Monday, October 15 at 5 p.m.

So What’s the Problem: Using Collaboration to Change Organizational Culture

  • 10 a.m. – noon in Smathers Library Room 1A
  • How does conflict management influence the organizational culture of a large, complex United Nations agency such as the World Health Organization (WHO)?  In 2010, WHO issued a request for proposal to address concerns pertaining to performance management and development. The Inlow Group, PDRI-Washington DC, and the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan were awarded the contract.  This workshop explores the challenges of designing and applying conflict management systems that impact the organization as a whole. The team created the Collaborative Interpersonal Competencies model. The workshop is led by none other than Lin Inlow, founder of the Inlow Group and creator of the model! The audience will have the opportunity to interact with each other and better understand the nature of collaboration.

Greater Gator and Gamecock Tailgater

  • 3 hours before kickoff (Front lawn of the infirmary)

  • Stop by the ‘Greater Gator and Gamecock Tailgater’ on Saturday, October 20, 2012 on the front lawn of the Student Health Care Center. The tailgate will begin three hours prior to kick-off the UF vs. USC football game. There will be games including a Cornhole tournament, free food, prizes, and more.
