Global understanding and diversity is essential for University of Florida graduates to serve the land grant mission of the institution to provide leadership for the state, nation, and world. The Division of Student Affairs has Global Understanding and Diversity as one of its Key Strategic Areas in the strategic plan.
Global Understanding and Diversity means:
Increase knowledge, experience, appreciation and respect of cultures, issues, and local, regional, and global communities. Develop intentional opportunities for interaction and integration of information from various perspectives.
In order to more fully understand this, Global competency exists when a person:
- Exhibits awareness of one’s own cultural values, beliefs, attitudes, biases and stereotypes and the impact of these on others.
- Demonstrates knowledge about world history, current events and global economics & sustainability.
- Acknowledges and respects the existence of different cultural values, beliefs and attitudes.
- Recognizes that people are interconnected and globally interdependent.
- Communicates and collaborates effectively in a cross-cultural environment.
- Accepts responsibility for active world citizenship.
