The Division of Student Affairs at the University of Florida has been working towards developing its own internal assessment plan for its departments.
In 2007, Dr. Ainsley Carry organized the Student Affairs Assessment Committee to determine the best way to move forward with the Division’s plan for assessment. The committee members included: Chris Bullins, Sorority and Fraternity Affairs; Diane Porter, Housing and Residence Education; Yanmei Zhang, Housing and Residence Education; Nancy Chrystal-Green, Recreational Sports; Heather White, Career Resource Center; Ann Ho Becks, Dean of Students Office; Shari Lupton, Educational Leadership; Luis Ponjuan (ex-officio), Educational Leadership; Lance Kennedy Phillips, Institutional Research. The Committee’s report, a Proposal for a UF Office of Student Affairs Assessment, can be found here.
Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, resources to create this office were not available. A new charge was given to this committee, which also incurred some personnel changes with Dr. Carry’s departure and replacement with Dr. Jeanna Mastrodicasa, as well as the hiring of a Reitz Union assessment coordinator, Jeannie Starobin. Dr. Telles-Irvin’s new charge to the committee was to develop a proposal for each department to develop an assessment plan and implement this plan. This plan was modeled after the one at DePaul University, where committee member Lance Kennedy-Phillips had worked on the project. The Assessment Plan was discussed at the Vice President’s Council for several months and the final version of the plan has been accepted.
Now that the assessment plan has been approved by the departments, they are conducting their initial assessment plans for a December 1, 2008 deadline. The support for the assessment activities throughout the Division of Student Affairs is being provided through a new reorganized Student Affairs Assessment Coordination Team—“The A-Team.” This new Team will provide support for departments, training on assessment for the division, and work to provide feedback and support on each other’s assessment projects.
