The Florida Opportunity Scholars Program is a new initiative to ensure first-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds have the resources they need to be academically successful at the University of Florida.  The goal of the program is to retain these students and have them graduate at rates equal to or greater than the undergraduate population at large.

Program philosophy

First-generation students have unique needs and challenges.  The Florida Opportunity Scholars Program was developed to expand the opportunities for academically prepared first-generation students to attend UF without being overwhelmed with the additional costs (e.g., books and fees, meal and housing, transportation, miscellaneous expenses) of attending college.  A number of support strategies are in place for this group to ensure their academic success, engagement at UF, social interaction, and a sense of belonging to the UF community.

Demographics

In the summer of 2006 the Florida Opportunity Scholars program welcomed its first class of students. Today there are 771 Scholars attending the University of Florida.  There are 241 males and 530 females.  Ethnic breakdowns are as follow:

  • Africian American 327
  • Hispanic 183
  • White 160
  • Asian American 81
  • Other/ unknown 20
