Strategic Plan

Beginning in the fall 2005 the Division of Student Affairs engaged in a rigorous process to build a comprehensive strategic plan.  The process began with a single question: What does the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Florida look like when it is at its best?

The Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Patricia Telles-Irvin charged a Division-wide committee, referred to as the Core Planning Team with the task of building a comprehensive strategic plan that:

  • Fosters an understanding among staff and students of the values of the University of Florida and the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Explains what it means to be part of the Foundation for the Gator Nation.

What does the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Florida look like when it is at its best? This is one of the questions the core planning team addressed during the strategic planning process.  The process began with the Vice President of Student Affairs and her desire to develop a strategic plan for staff and students to understand the values of the University of Florida and the Division of Student Affairs and what it means to be part of the Foundation for the Gator Nation.

The first phase of the strategic planning process included development of a clear vision, mission and values statements. The newly created mission, vision and values statements then served as the catalyst for the Division’s long-range planning.  A professional consultant was hired to provide an external perspective and assist in the direction of the process itself. Three representatives from each department within the Division were identified to form a core team.

Guided by the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and the external consultant, the core planning team conducted an external/internal analyses and benchmarking. The team met throughout the summer to review and to discuss the internal strengths of staff; internal limitations from staffing practices, communication and funding; external threats; and external opportunities including fundraising. Broad strategic areas were identified through the work of the team.

The Vice President’s Council reviewed the team’s recommendations and confirmed eight key strategic areas to provide the vision and strategy necessary for future growth. To be certain the process was inclusive and collaborative, the Vice President shared with all Division staff at the 2006 fall kick-off event the strategic planning process and the importance of each department to the continued success of the Division.

The second phase of the strategic plan included development of departmental goals and objectives based on the key strategic areas.  From November through December 2006, the core planning team met with each department to discuss and facilitate the process.

The 2007-2010 Strategic Plan represents the work of the entire division. It links Division goals and department goals and guides the Division’s work over the next three years. The strategic planning process itself further encourages an environment of analysis, discussion and communication. Each year, the Division and departments will review the strategic plan and make necessary changes as issues emerge.
