Norbert W. Dunkel is Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Florida. He is responsible for the budget development and management of financial services for all student affairs departments totaling over $110 million. He is concurrently responsible for the oversight of the student affairs auxiliary departments including the Department of Recreational Sports, J. Wayne Reitz Union, GatorWell Health Promotion Services, the Office for Youth Conference Services, the Office of Off-Campus Life, and the Department of Housing and Residence Education. Within these auxiliary operations he oversees 1800 full and part-time employees with operational auxiliary budgets over $76 million annually. These auxiliaries are responsible for 170 facilities encompassing 4 million square feet. He also provides oversight for the Division of Student Affairs sustainability planning.

Mr. Dunkel came to the University of Florida in 1988 after holding administrative positions at South Dakota State University and the University of Northern Iowa. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. At the University of Florida, Mr. Dunkel is a member of the UF Budget Advisory Council, Emergency Policy Group/Executive Management Team, Food Service Advisory Council, Superior Accomplishment Awards Committee, Land Use and Facilities Planning Committee, and UF Title IX Committee.

Mr. Dunkel is a Past-President of the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I). ACUHO-I represents over 1000 institutions in 22 countries. Dunkel co-founded and co-directed the ACUHO-I James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute for its first 10 years – the Institute just celebrated its 25 year anniversary. Dunkel has authored or edited 19 books or monographs and over 40 chapters or articles on topics related to crisis management, campus housing, and student organizations.  He recently served as lead editor and co-author of the book, Advising Student Groups and Organizations in 2014. He served as lead editor and author of the six -volume book series, Campus Housing Management in 2013. He also co-edited and authored the book, Campus Crisis Management published by Jossey-Bass in 2007. He has served as a consultant at over 20 universities and colleges and has twice testified before U.S. Congressional committees.  In 2009, he hosted the Global Housing Summit in Hong Kong, China where 100 housing directors from 10 countries were represented. He has co-directed and co-founded the ACUHO-I SAC South African Roelf Visser Student Housing Training Institute at Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria to train housing and student affairs professionals in South Africa from 2011 to 2014.

Mr. Dunkel has received the Foundation Parthenon Society Award, Leadership and Service, Presidential Service, and Research and Publication Awards from ACUHO-I; the Dr. Kenneth Stoner Distinguished Service Award and Dan Hallenbeck Service Award from NACURH; the Charles W. Beene Memorial Service Award from SEAHO, and the James E. Scott Memorial Award and the C. Arthur Sandeen Award from the University of Florida. Mr. Dunkel has also received honorary inductions into the Florida Blue Key Leadership Honorary and the Golden Key International Honour Society.

Norb and his wife, Kim, live in Gainesville, Florida and have one son, Nicholas, who recently graduated from the University of Florida.
